In 1954 the United Nations General Assembly recommended that all countries around the world should set aside a day to celebrate children. The aim was that Children’s Day would be seen as a symbol of worldwide fraternity and understanding, and also be an opportunity to promote the welfare of children.

The Assembly suggested that Children’s Day be observed on the date which each country considers appropriate.

The 20th of November — International Children’s Day — marks the day in which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

Like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, Children’s Day celebrations vary around the world. Here are a few of the international celebrations:

International Children's Day :

The second Sunday in December. This is a joint initiative between UNICEF and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. It's a day when broadcasters "tune in to kids".

Children’s Day in Germany - held a number of different celebrations that honors their children. Around 1990, with a reunified Germany, an attempt was made to formalize the holiday. However, when and how it is celebrated largely depends upon where a person resides within Germany.

Children’s Day in Thailand - On the second Saturday of January the Thai people celebrate Children's Day by taking their children out to have fun. Many local authorities organise special events and other places of interests usually let children in for half price or even for free on this day.
