I joined the General Management Programme of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in October 2013. The course will get over in May 2014. It has given me a greater understanding of human and corporate behavior.
Description
Prevention is better than cure. Prevention requires awareness, willingness to choose the right alternatives and continued revaluation of our choices! Alternative choices must be easy to understand and fun to follow! Strong will power must not be a prerequisite for bringing about the changes!

Leadership is about harnessing the potential of people. Leader must realize that eustress becomes distress when one crosses the optimal point! Targets and goals are not everything! They can be easily crossed if we learn to enjoy the process!

Today stress has relevant to our career, whether we have entrepreneurial ambitions or not! This is mandatory to influence people and survive the long hours. In order to reduce stress one needs good health, good looks and good energy levels, both physical and mental! Good habits which reduce stress are also the same habits which reduce our cholesterol, blood pressure and sugar level less! They also make the blood thinner (aspirin effect) which reduce the chances of heart attacks and strokes!

Stress is a function of control! Control is basically everyday freedom of being able to do what one wants to do and whenever one wants, work and elsewhere! The timing of things matters including for food and exercise. A mismatch of our mood and activity is a basic cause of stress. The bad news is that there are only twenty four hours in a day and the good news is that only we control how we want to spend these hours most of the times! Prioritizing is the most important art and tool of stress management!

Awareness and not willpower is the basic necessity. In my practice as a physician, I have always ensured that my suggestions (for behavioral change) are simple, easy to follow and not requiring strong will power. One has to exercise his wisdom and plan a schedule for oneself! If one is expected to eat salad, there is no need to make it tasteless and boring! Making our veggies taste great is the easiest way to avoid junk food Regular eating, every three to four hours helps metabolism by reducing body’s need to maintain blood sugar levels! Healthier food is usually self regulating - you tend to stop when you feel full.

Be active every day. Besides cardiovascular fitness exercises, one must also do strength training and flexibility training for stress management! Endurance training is best avoided as it adds to stress! Going out in sunlight not only increases Vitamin D but also helps manage stress! Professional/vocational excellence is not only service to humanity and god but also helps you in reducing stress! When you help a stranger, you are actually doing yourselves a favor!

Another important thing is to get a good mix of task to leisure activity! We must learn to enjoy the process and not worry about the result! Goals aren’t needed. Goals and targets add stress even if it is health related voluntary commitment! It’s important to remember that the intensity of your workout has a surprisingly small impact on your weight unless you’re running half-marathons every week. If your diet is right, moderate exercise is all you need. If there is soreness, there is some kind of endurance training going on! “No pain, no gain” is totally wrong! As matter of fact, pain keeps one away from gain.

Don’t get hung up on the details! Stress is generally less in people who live healthy are on the right track! The speed not only does not matter, it actually is detrimental! The important point is that keep yourselves aware, make right choices and revaluate regularly for lapses in the process! When one is less stressed, our body feels good! We become flexible and learn to accept the petty annoyances in our life as collateral events!
