This Puja is performed for long and healhy life and to bring the person out of clutches of prolonged and severe illness. Sanjeevani mantra chanting is also a form of propitiating Lord Shiva so that the person may be released from the bondage of death and nourished with nectar bestowing a fresh lease of life. It is also traditionally recommended to relieve the malefic influence of Mangal (Mars) or Shani (Saturn) when certain astrological combinations are present in the Jyotish chart.
